Benson Area Refugee Taskforce (BART) is disheartened and unsettled by the recent events of turmoil and violence in our nation’s capital. We denounce the President’s provocative speech on January 6th that led to the chaos, destruction and deaths later that same day. Seeing confederate flags, hearing inflammatory language and witnessing brutal force by protestors was frightening and horrifying. Speech and actions such as these violate human dignity and impede an equitable society.
BART believes that uplifting refugees through education, empowerment and advocacy is an integral component of a healthy community. While our politics, beliefs and religious affiliations may differ, our call to solidarity is stronger. Full and equal participation in a society cannot prevail when physical and oratory violence exist against people of color. We support non-violent protest and dissenting voices with reciprocal listening and strategic reaction. BART believes mutuality and civil engagement help build a safe and just society.
BART pledges to sustain our work, serving with compassionate action that defeats racism and promotes equality. We recognize there is much work ahead, and through intentional partnerships, BART’s mission will strengthen Omaha’s refugees in reaching their full potential.
